Transradial vs. Femoral Artery Access
At CICT 2010 meeting today a debate was hosted on using radial access or femoral access. Although the majority of access is femoral, more patients are beginning to request radial. Both access points are equally efficacious, but studies have shown that radial has benefits over femoral, especially in women. Radial access is showing lower procedural complications and procedural success is not very different; the protective effects of transradial interventions are most pronounced in women; there are increasing data that radial access may be associated with lower mortality; and patient satisfaction is increased with transradial – one study showed 80% of patients preferred transradial. A significant drawback to radial access, however, is the exposure to radiation. What are your thoughts on this type of access? Are you performing interventions transradially or femorally.
